Sunshine Village Introduction

Sunshine Village is located at a high altitude in the Rocky Mountains, with its highest point exceeding 2,730 meters. The annual average snowfall here can reach about 9 meters.

Sunshine Village is renowned for its soft, dry powder snow, which is light and buoyant, ideal for skiing and snowboarding.

Taken by Sunshine Village

The resort is primarily divided into two areas: the Base Area and the Village Area. The map of the base and village is shown as follows:

Sunshine Village Maps
Map of the Base Area and the Village Area
  • Base Area: Situated at the ski resort’s entrance, the base area includes the parking lot, customer service center, ticket center, ski equipment rental shops, retail stores, and a Gondola connecting the Base Area to the Village Area.
  • Village Area: This area has ski trails and is reached by a 20-minute gondola ride. It has restaurants, cafes, rest areas, retail stores, ski schools, and equipment rental shops. The only hotel in the resort area, Sunshine Mountain Lodge, is also located here.

The parking lot in the Base Area is as follows: By 8 am, there’s already a long queue of cars for parking. It’s barely dawn, but many people are already in the base area.

If you have booked a ski lesson, you should arrive at the parking lot in the Base Area no later than 8:30 am, as parking, ticket collection, and Gondola boarding all require queuing.

After parking your car, you can follow the flow of people into the Base Area.

Sunshine Village Base Area

If you need to rent ski equipment or pick up lift tickets at the Base Area, you should go to Bourgeau Lodge. The ticket windows are on the first floor, and the ski rental center is on the second floor.

If you purchased ski lessons and also bought lift tickets and rented ski equipment, you first need to go to the Ski School Desk on the second floor of Creekside Lodge to get your lift tickets and a “Voucher” for renting ski equipment. Then, proceed to the second floor of Bourgeau Lodge to pick up your ski equipment.

If you have already picked up your tickets or are using a mobile ticket and have also picked up your ski equipment, you can head directly to board the Gondola.

Sunshine Village Base Area

To get from the Base Area to the Village Area, you need to take an enclosed Gondola, operating from 8:00 am to 10:30 pm.

It takes about 20 minutes to get from the Base Area to the Village Area by Gondola. There is a Mid Station where the doors of the Gondola open for a couple of minutes. If you plan to go to the Village Area, please do not get off at the Mid Station.

Once you reach the Village Area, you can take different chairlifts to various ski trails. The chairlifts operate from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and are mostly four-seater (Quad).

In summary, the best time to arrive at the parking lot in the Base Area is around 8 am, and then you could take the Gondola to the Village Area.

Around this time, it’s easy to find a parking spot, and there’s no need to queue for the Gondola, allowing you to be one of the first to reach the Village Area.

There are several chairlifts in the Village Area:

Sunshine Village Village Area
  • Angel Express:It connects to the super-long green run “Creek Run” and multiple black runs.
  • Strawberry Express:It is best for green run skiers, and it connects to a long and fun green run called “Rock Isle Road”.
  • Magic Carpet:It is suitable for beginners and is a primary trail for ski learning.
  • Standish Express: It takes you to the top of Mountain Standish, offering a magnificent view.
  • Wawa: It connects to a long green run called “Meadow Park”, as well as multiple green and black runs.

You can tell the level of the trails by observing the background color of the chairlift signs.

For example, as you can see in the following picture, Strawberry Express is painted green, indicating that it leads to green runs.

Stawberry Express at Sunshine Village

All these chairlifts are located in the Village Area. Sunshine Village has many other chairlifts, but their starting points are not in the Village Area.

The skiing season at Sunshine Village usually runs from early November each year to mid-May of the following year, making it one of the longest ski seasons in North America.

Note that as the snowfall can vary each year, please check the official website or call to confirm the opening times for the season before booking.

Transportation to Sunshine Village

Sunshine Village Ski Resort is located about 20 kilometers west of Banff Town (a 20-minute drive) and approximately 135 kilometers from Calgary International Airport (YYC), which is about a one-and-a-half-hour drive.

YYC Banff Sunshine
Drive Distance between YYC and Sunshine Village

We usually fly to Calgary YYC Airport and then rent a car to stay in Banff or Canmore Town. On the day of skiing, we drive to Sunshine Village and then drive back to the town after the sunset.

The parking at Sunshine Village is free, but you need to have a Banff National Park pass.

There are direct flights to Calgary YYC Airport from many cities in the United States. A few cities with direct flights to YYC are listed below:

The flight times from different cities to YYC are as follows:

Vancouver1.5 hr
New York5.25 hr
Chicago3.75 hr
Orlando5.5 hr

Renting a car at Calgary YYC Airport is very convenient. The rental car center is located within the airport. Just exit near Bag Claim #1-3, cross a street, and you’re there, without the need for a Shuttle Bus.

The main rental car companies here are:

Car rentals in YYC airport
  • AVIS
  • Hertz
  • Enterprise
  • Budget
  • Dollar
  • National
  • Alamo
  • Thrifty

Besides these companies located inside the airport, some require taking a Shuttle Bus to pick up the car. These might be cheaper, but less convenient, such as:

  • Discount
  • Routes
  • Udrive
  • Driving Force
  • NU car rental

There are two Marriott hotels inside YYC Airport:

  • Calgary Airport Marriott
  • Delta Hotel Calgary Airport
Marriott at YYC
Marriott Hotel at YYC
Delta Hotel at YYC
Delta Hotel by Marriott at YYC

If you have an early morning flight the next day or arrive late at night, consider staying at YYC Airport for convenience.

I have a Marriott Boundless Hotel credit card, which makes staying at these two hotels very convenient and reasonably priced.

Most importantly, they are within walking distance of the boarding gates, and the hotel conditions are excellent.

Check out the Marriott hotel credit card, and apply for the card to get three nights’ stay, plus an additional night every year, with an annual fee of $95/year.

How to Purchase Lift Tickets?

You can purchase lift tickets directly from the Sunshine Village official website. Consider using the Sunshine Village APP to buy a Mobile Lift Ticket, allowing you to board the Gondola by simply scanning a QR code.

Sunshine Village APP
Sunshine Village APP

The advantage of buying a Mobile Ticket is that you can add the lift ticket QR code to your phone, eliminating the need to exchange for a physical ticket at the ticket office, thus saving a lot of time in queues.

The price for an adult day ticket is approximately between CAD $100 and $170, with discounts usually available for children and seniors.

In addition, Sunshine Village offers various options such as Seasonal Pass, Super Pass, half-day tickets, and multi-day tickets.

Since Sunshine Village is part of the Ikon Pass alliance, if you are an Ikon Pass holder, you can directly use it at Sunshine Village.

For more information about the Ikon Pass, please read “What is the Ikon Pass?”

Additionally, multi-day tickets and the Super Card are excellent choices. If you plan to visit Sunshine Village frequently, then the Super Card might be more cost-effective.

The Super Card mainly offers the following benefits:

  • Free Ski Days:The Super Card provides free lift access on your first use and certain specific days, such as the first, fourth, and seventh visits as offered with the Super Card I purchased.
  • Day Ticket Discounts: On non-free ski days, you can enjoy discounts on day tickets, such as saving CAD $30 each time.
  • Bring-a-Friend Benefits: Cardholders may be able to bring friends at a discounted price on specific days.
  • Other Discounts: These may include discounts on equipment rental, food and beverage offers, or lodging discounts.

Apart from purchasing on the Sunshine Village official website, you can also use SkiBig3.com to buy lift tickets.

This is a third-party organization that collaborates with the three Canadian ski resorts (Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Mt Norquay), offering one-stop services for accommodation booking, lift ticket purchases, and ski equipment rental.

A lift ticket purchased from SkiBig3 is as follows:

If you plan to stay in Banff Town or Canmore Town, I recommend using SkiBig3 to book accommodation, lifts, and ski equipment together, as combined bookings often provide good discounts.

How to Rent Ski Equipment?

You can book ski equipment directly on the Sunshine Village official website and then pick up the equipment at their rental center.

Both the Base Area and Village Area of Sunshine Village have ski equipment rental centers. When booking online, you need to specify the location where you will pick up the equipment.

It’s important to note that ski equipment rented from Sunshine Village generally does not include a helmet, and renting a helmet requires an additional fee.

If you are staying in Banff Town or Canmore Town, we recommend renting ski equipment through BigSki3.

SkiBig3 has stores in both Banff and Canmore, where you can pick up lift tickets and try on ski equipment the afternoon before skiing.

SkiBig3 will deliver the fitted ski equipment directly to your hotel, and at the end of your stay, you can simply return the equipment to the hotel.

SkiBig3 Banff Store:

114 Banff Avenue, Banff, AB, Canada

Phone: 403-762-4754

SkiBig3 Canmore Store:

350 Railway Ave Unit 104, Canmore, AB, Canada

Phone: 403-760-5455

Since you have already rented your ski equipment in advance, the next morning you can drive to the Base Area, park your car, and directly board the Gondola, saving a lot of time.

Additionally, ski equipment rental from SkiBig3 includes a helmet.

The downside is that if you encounter any issues with your skis or boots while skiing, you won’t get immediate help. You may need to rent another set of equipment from the Sunshine Village rental center.

Accommodation at Sunshine Village

  • Sunshine Mountain Lodge: This is the only accommodation within the Sunshine Village Ski Resort, offering a convenient ski-in experience, but it comes at a high price.
  • Banff Town: Just a 25-minute drive from Sunshine Village, Banff Town is arguably the best choice for accommodation, offering economical options and the convenience of many restaurants, supermarkets, and shops.
  • Canmore Town: About a 33-minute drive from Sunshine Village, Canmore Town is another great option apart from Banff Town.
  • Calgary: The Marriott Four Seasons Hotel is about 1 hour and 18 minutes away from Sunshine Village and is cheaper, but farther away. There are discounts for booking with a Marriott credit card.

I recommend staying in Banff Town or Canmore Town and booking hotels, lift tickets, and ski equipment through BigSki3.

Of course, you can also book the lift ticket directly from Sunshine Village’s official website to take advantage of a super pass or mobile ticket.

The following picture shows a street view of Banff town. It is a charming and convenient town. The most important avenue is Banff Avenue. There are many restaurants and stores on this avenue.

If you are living near this avenue, your stay will be much more fun and easier. By the way, there is one restaurant called “The Old Spaghetti Factory” on the avenue, and it is very cost-effective and super delicious.

The day before skiing, you could go to the BigSki3 store in Banff or Canmore town to pick up lift tickets and adjust your ski equipment.

A few recommended hotels in Banff Town are:

Peaks Hotel and Suites ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This four-star hotel is located in the center of Banff Town, close to almost all shops and restaurants. It’s a 5-minute walk to Starbucks and a 6-minute walk to the SkiBig3 store, making it highly recommended. The only downside is an additional parking charge, mainly because the parking is indoor and heated.

Alpine Responsibility Code

The Alpine Responsibility Code is a set of guidelines designed to help skiers and snowboarders safely share ski slopes and terrain. It’s widely recognized and used in ski areas worldwide, not just in alpine regions.

The code consists of common sense rules emphasizing safety and respect for others on the mountain.

alpine responsiblity code

Key elements of the Alpine Responsibility Code include:

  1. Stay in Control: Always ski or snowboard within your ability level and be able to stop or avoid people or objects.
  2. People Ahead Have the Right of Way: People downhill or in front of you have the right of way, and you must avoid them.
  3. Stop Safely: Stop in a safe place for you and others. Avoid stopping in narrow places or where you’re not visible from above.
  4. Look Before You Leap: When starting downhill or merging onto a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  5. Use Devices to Help Prevent Runaway Equipment: Utilize ski straps or similar devices to prevent your equipment from running away.
  6. Observe Signs and Warnings: Stay off closed trails and out of closed areas and obey all posted signs and warnings.
  7. Know How to Use Lifts Safely: Have the knowledge and ability to load, ride, and unload lifts safely. If you need help, ask the lift attendants.

The code also often includes guidelines on what to do in case of collisions and incidents, such as assisting others in need, identifying yourself, and notifying ski patrol if necessary. The Alpine Responsibility Code aims to enhance safety and enjoyment for everyone on the slopes.

In Conclusion

If you’re planning to ski at Sunshine Village Ski Resort, don’t miss the Banff—Icefield Pkwy—Jasper snow trip. On this trip, you can see the wholly frozen Lake Louise, perennial glaciers, and the ice waterfall Tangle Fall and experience the unique adventure of walking on the ice in Maligne Canyon.
