Oahu, between Kauai and Maui, is the political, economic, and cultural center of all of Hawaii. One of them, Honununu (Honolulu), is the state capital of the Hawaiian Islands and is the earliest developed and most prosperous city.

Oahu is surrounded by ocean on the west and has countless beaches, with close to 70 beaches throughout the island, with Waimanalo Beach being the largest with four miles of coastline. Waikiki Beach, marked on the map, is the most famous and crowded.

What are the airports in Oahu?

Oahu’s airport is located in Honolulu and is called Honolulu International Airport, or HNL for short. It is the largest and busiest airport in the entire Hawaiian archipelago, with flights from many U.S. cities. There are also flights from HNL to the other three islands, so if you are traveling to the other three islands, you can connect at HNL.

Transportation

Need to rent a car in Oahu?

Many of you will ask this question and my answer is that it is needed and not required, why? Oahu is very well connected, one of the most developed of all the Hawaiian Islands, so there is a lot of public transportation here, and most importantly almost all attractions here offer paid or free bus service, for example, if you go to the Polynesian Center, which is about a 1-hour drive one way to get there from Honolulu, you can book a bus to get there. Also, you will need to pay to park at many of the hotels. So, you won’t need to rent a car to visit any of Oahu’s attractions.

But Oahu’s coastal scenery is so beautiful that it’s a bit of a shame not to take a drive out for a spin, so our advice is that you don’t need to rent a car when playing the various attractions, and you can rent one for the last day or two to get a tour around the island, which is sure to be a different experience.

Choosing where to stay on Oahu is very important, and many attractions offer bus services that only stop at hotels near Waikiki Beach. Below we’ve listed a few hotels where the bus stops, basically near Waikiki Beach.

1. Waikiki beach

Waikiki beach
Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is the busiest area on the entire island of Oahu, the commercial center of the entire island, and of course, it is very crowded. The beach is naturally the most beautiful, but the beach is very crowded, there are places to rent sun umbrellas and lounge chairs on the beach, rows and rows, very compact, and if you go late, you may not be able to rent, the price is about $45/day. Compared with Maui’s beaches, there are too many people, less of the feeling of seclusion and leisure, and the commercial flavor will be a little more intense.

There are a variety of hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment programs, and one of the busiest shopping streets is Kalakaua Avenue, which is lined with many of the world’s top brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and so on. Luxury Row, located at 2100 Kalakaua Avenue, is home to a large number of luxury brands such as Tiffany’s, Chanel, Gucci, and more. When you buy things in Hawaii, the excise tax is around 4%~5% before, compared to the 8%~9% excise tax in Texas, you can save a lot of money, especially for luxury goods.

2. Polynesian Cultural Center

Polynesian Cultural Center
Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is located on the North Shore of Oahu, about 60 kilometers from downtown Honolulu, with bus transportation available if you are traveling from hotels around Waikiki Beach. The center’s performances and staff are primarily made up of native representatives from Fiji, the Tonga Islands, New Zealand, Tahiti, the Samoan Islands, the Marquesas, and Hawaii, many of whom are current students.

The Cultural Center consists of seven different cultural villages: Samoa, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, Marquesas, Tahiti, and Tonga. Each village has its buildings, displays, and customs that represent its own culture and folklore. The Polynesian culture can be experienced in all its splendor, and you can enjoy an open-air historical canoe show, as well as a large-scale musical and dance show.

The Polynesian Cultural Center offers seven different types of packages, the cheapest of which is $89.95 for adults and $71.96 for children, and includes a tour of all the tribes, a nice buffet dinner, and an evening performance called “Ha: Breath of Life”. We bought another package that also includes lunch, called “ALI’I LUAU PACKAGE”. You can book the tickets on the official website, and if you need a bus service, add the bus service when you book the tickets, it’s about $25 per person.

3. Submarine undersea treasure hunting

Honolulu’s most famous beach is Waikiki Beach, where you can take a submarine ride into the deep waters of the nearby ocean and see turtles, sharks, and a variety of fish, as well as shipwrecks and underwater worlds. You can choose Atlantis Adventure, a company that offers a variety of cruises and submarine tours in the Hawaiian Islands.

You can choose between two classes of submarines, one for 48 passengers and one made for 64, the latter being larger. The entire tour takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes and you can check the official website for the latest prices and boarding information. It is important to note that you need to arrive at the boarding point 30 minutes early, and also that children under the age of one and children less than 36 inches tall are not allowed to ride the submarine’s. Below are the prices for both types of submarines:

  • Submarine price for 64 people: $119 for an adult, $129 for an adult plus a child.
  • Submarine price for 48 people: $105 for an adult, $115 for an adult and a child.

This submarine excursion service provides a free round-trip bus service from your hotel near Waikiki Beach to the embarkation point, and you can call 1-800-381-0237 to ask if your hotel has a free bus service. If you are driving there yourself, the embarkation address is at 252 Paoa Pl, Honolulu, HI, United States, just off Waikiki Beach. You’ll begin your underwater journey with a cruise to the submarine entrance in the ocean. When boarding the submarine from the cruise ship or returning from the submarine to the cruise ship, it can be very dizzying. I am non-seasick, but when I got off the ship that day, I was still dizzy. You can prepare some Dramamine for seasickness just in case.
