New York City is one of the busiest and most visited cities in the United States. Visitor numbers have largely recovered from the pandemic, and official tourism forecasts expect the city to remain a major destination in 2026.
New York City consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island. Manhattan is the core borough for many first-time visitors and is home to landmarks such as Central Park, Times Square, Wall Street, and the United Nations.
Let’s start by answering a couple of questions that people might ask before they leave:
- Should I rent a car in Manhattan? No, parking is very tight and extremely expensive here, and driving in the NYC metro area is stressful for most visitors.
- Do I need to make reservations in advance to go to various attractions? Be sure to make reservations as early as possible. For example, it is difficult to get a temporary ticket for the cruise to visit the Statue of Liberty and the United Nations tour without making reservations in advance.
- Do you need to buy a CityPass?All big cities offer CityPass, and New York is no exception, you don’t need a City Pass here because with a City Pass ticket, you often need to go to the ticket counter to change your ticket, and you still have to wait a long time. In the meantime, there are many ways to get cheaper tickets. In the following article, we will share them with you.
- Where is the most convenient place to stay? It is most convenient to stay near Times Square and Central Park South, the intersection of Broadway and 45th to 55th Streets. For example, the Hilton Garden Inn at Central Park South is conveniently located a 15-minute walk from Times Square and about 12 minutes from the #1 subway entrance.
Manhattan in New York City is bustling with people everywhere. In any scenic spot, it is more difficult to find a place to take a picture with fewer people, so the background of the photo must be all people, people, people. Below, we will share with you the travel tips for Manhattan from [Weather], [Airport], [Transportation], [Accommodation], [Tourist Attractions], and [Food and Drink], with a few pictures first:

1. The Weather in New York
Summer is the prime season for traveling in New York, with temperatures generally between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, making it a summer vacation spot compared to summers in Texas and Arizona.
When I heard a young girl with an umbrella next to me on this cruise complaining about the heat, I muttered to myself that I should show you Texas. Of course, the winters here are brutal and often too snowy to travel. So, try to avoid New York in the winter.
2. Map of New York City
New York City consists of five important boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island. New York City’s most famous tourist attractions are located in Manhattan, for example, the Statue of Liberty is located on a small island called Liberty Island, just south of Manhattan.

3. New York Airports
As you can see from the map above, there are three major airports near New York City: Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport. International Airport.)
- Newark Airport is located in New Jersey, near New York City, and is about a 40-minute drive from Manhattan, which is accessible by car via an undersea tunnel or a bridge over a river. It costs about $60 for a Lyft or Uber ride, and a little more if you take the yellow Taxi. We usually fly into this airport when coming from Texas because the flight is the closest and there are direct flights to Las Vegas that take about 3 hours and 55 minutes.
- LaGuardia Airport is the closest to Manhattan and can be reached in 20 minutes without traffic. If you are in a city where you can fly into this airport, it is the quickest way to get to Manhattan.
- John F. Kennedy International Airport is located in New York City, just south of Queens, and is also farther away from Manhattan, requiring a bridge across the river to reach it. Many cities in the United States have direct flights to this airport. Since this airport is slightly further inland, the flight time should be the longest. There are also direct flights from here to Dallas, with a flight time of about 4 hours and 15 minutes.
4. Map of Manhattan, New York
Manhattan can be divided into three main areas, from Central Park to the Statue of Liberty: Uptown, Midtown, and Downtown, but of course, it can be subdivided as shown below. Times Square is near the center of Midtown West, many museums are located on both sides of Uptown’s Central Park, many tall buildings, such as the Empire State Building, are located in the area between Midtown and Downtown, and to see the Statue of Liberty, you need to arrive at the southernmost tip of the Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, from which you can board a boat to see the Statue of Liberty. Park, at the southernmost tip of Lower Manhattan, from where you can board a boat and catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty.

5. Transportation within Manhattan, New York
We’ve shared with you that renting a car in New York is not recommended, it’s expensive and dangerous. So how do you get around in New York?
The answer is the following four: ground walking, Taxi (including Lyft, Uber, Juno), subway buses, and city tour buses.
- Ground Walking: If you choose the right place to stay, it is within walking distance to reach many attractions and restaurants, and it will be faster. For example, it takes 12 minutes to walk from the hotel where we stayed to Times Square, but by cab, it takes 15-20 minutes, mainly because many roads are one-way and because of traffic jams.
- Cab: Yellow cabs are everywhere in Manhattan, especially in front of famous attractions. Meanwhile, you can book a cab using Lyft, Uber, or Juno, which is a cab app specifically for New York City, so set up your Lyft, Uber, or Juno account on your phone before coming to Manhattan. I prefer Lyft and feel that the price will be cheaper. When using Lyft, make sure you know where you are going to be picking up. If you are in a crowded area or on a road that is crowded, you may not be able to find the car you have booked and the Lyft owner may claim that they can’t find you, and Lyft will charge you a “no show” fee of about $10.
- Subway Bus: Manhattan’s city public transportation is very well developed, you can take the subway or bus to reach the various attractions. The subway in the Manhattan area is still very safe, so you don’t need to worry about it. For example, subway line 1 connects Central Park and the Statue of Liberty in Manhattan. You cancheck out specific information about the New York City subway. However, the quality of the subway and the ride environment is not complimentary, and the subway in Chicago does not feel much production, and Shanghai is not in a class at all.
- City Tours: These are called “Hop on – Hop off” tours and you can choose different routes and the number of days you want to ride, and you can get on and off at any time at the stops along the cable car. In New York, many companies offer this service, such as Top View, and you can choose different routes and ride times on their website.
6. Lodging in Manhattan, New York
The Manhattan area is full of hotels and there are so many to choose from. The main thing to consider is location and price. Try to choose a hotel that is close to the main attractions and also close to the subway or restaurants.
You can use Booking.com to search for your favorite hotel and compare prices and locations. We recommend staying at the intersection of Broadway and 45th to 55th Streets, which is about a 10-minute walk from Times Square and 5 to 10 minutes from Subway Line 1, which connects to Central Park and the South Ferry/Battery Park boarding point for the Statue of Liberty.
You may consider staying in Midtown West, but close to the Broadway neighborhood, e.g., Marriott Residence Inn Manhattan/Central Park or Hilton Garden Inn at Central Park South.
7. Restaurants in Manhattan, New York
The food in New York naturally needs no boasting, and with such a huge scale of tourists, there is certainly no shortage of delicious restaurants. There are many Chinatowns in New York, and the most famous ones are Flushing in Queens and Chinatown in Manhattan. This time we did not go to Chinatown but tasted a few Manhattan business districts, Times Square near the more characteristic restaurants.
Bullhorn (Gyu-Kaku)
This is a Japanese BBQ restaurant that is so popular that on weekends there is often a wait of over an hour and a half. The first day we went it was 7:30 pm and there was no wait, but we ended up going there at 5:30 pm the next day and waited about 15 minutes, so it’s really popular. It’s worth mentioning that the BBQ is really good, whether it’s beef, pancetta, or salmon it’s all genuinely good and 120% recommended. We ordered a $75 set menu for two people and thought we had ordered too much, but it turned out to be just the right amount for three people, so it was probably too good to eat. The price is about $35 per person.
This restaurant is a nationwide chain with a total of 48 locations in the U.S. and Canada, and the restaurant is offering a mobile app points program, download their app, which first gives 100 points, and log in with your Facebook account to get another 50 points, and when you sign up for the app, you can also enter my invitation code PeterZha76, so you can get another 50 points. So how do you use the 200 points you get? You can use the points to redeem a Beef Sukiyaki Bibimbaq, or two Ice Creams, and more. So make sure you set up your app before you go to eat. The location is at 321 W 44th St #103, New York, NY 10036.
Dim Sum Palace
This is a Cantonese restaurant where you can choose Dim Sum, or order a la carte, with some of the best being the Shredded Duck Spring Rolls, Peking Duck with Sliced Skin, and Duck Bone and Cabbage Soup. Prices are around $30 per person. This place is very close to Gyu-Kahu above, just about 5 minutes walking distance. So, live near Times Square and your stomach will be blessed. 8. Tourist attractions in Manhattan, New York
There are so many things to see in New York, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the United Nations, and so on. But many of these places require tickets or reservations in advance, otherwise, it can be hard to get tickets or you have to wait a long time.

Below we give you the ten most important attractions in Manhattan and what each one has to offer individually:
- Statue of Liberty
- American Museum of Natural History (American Museum of Natural History)
- Metropolitan Museum of Art
- Central Park
- Broadway
- Empire State Building
- Time Square
- National September 11 Memorial & Museum
- Wall Street
- The Fifth Avenue
1) Statue of Liberty

The boy had been studying the Statue of Liberty in school, so he asked us to bring him to see it. The Statue of Liberty sits on Liberty Island, the southernmost point in all of Manhattan, and requires a boat ride to view. The official cruise ship that tours the Statue of Liberty is called State Cruises and offers the following three main tours:
- Reserve ticket:The price is $18.50 for adults and $9 for children, which includes a round-trip boat ride to the base of the Statue of Liberty and a tour of the Ellis Island “Immigration Museum “;
Pedestal Reserve Ticket: Prices are the same as above, and in addition to all the tours above, you get to reach the foot of the Statue of Liberty;
- Crown Reserve Ticket:Priced at $21.50 for adults and $12 for kids, this includes a tour to reach the Crown at the head of the Statue of Liberty, in addition to all the tours offered by the Pedestal Reserve Ticket. However, children under the age of six, or less than 48 inches tall, are not allowed to go up.
If you choose State Cruises, you may want to know the following beforehand:
- Be prepared to wait in line because there are just too many people, especially during prime times like holidays and summer vacation;
Do not use CityPass tickets as tickets purchased with CityPass do not go directly on the ship and you will still have to wait a long time to change your ticket;
Buy your tickets in advance on State Cruises’ website, choose a specific departure time, choose to print your tickets, and arrive at the security checkpoint on the same day at the time of your reservation so you don’t have to wait to change your tickets;
If you MISS the boarding time, this ticket is neither refundable nor can you change the time. Customer service doesn’t answer the phone and no one will answer emails, this place is understaffed or there are just too many travelers.
For Pedestal Reserve Tickets, you may still have a chance of getting a ticket if you book a day in advance; however, for Crown Reserve Tickets, you have to book a long time in advance.

2) American Museum of Natural History

Located on the west side of Central Park, the museum is the filming location for the movie Night at the Hotel, the most famous history museum in the country, with close to 7,000 Google Reviews and an overall rating of over 4.6/5.0, it’s a must-visit attraction for a family, and we felt pretty blown away by our visit this time around.
The most noteworthy thing is that when we went to the museum, we met a few local Chinese in New York, which saved us more than an hour of queuing time, and we got a free Voucher to enter the museum, and we also enjoyed a nearly two-hour full Chinese explanation service with these New York friends, which was appreciated. Most notably, we were treated to the super-sized 3D movie Amazon Rain Forest and a Space Show called Dark Universe, both of which were spectacular and unlike anything we’d seen before. The 3D movie was truly a Giant film, with the biggest screen we’ve ever seen, and the Space Show was a total first-time experience, definitely worth every penny. We would like to share a few tips with you below:
You can save a lot of time by buying your tickets beforehand on the official website, as there will be long lines for tickets as well;
There are several different types of tickets, and you’d be wise to choose the most expensive one, Admission + All, which is $33 for adults and $20 for kids, and includes the aforementioned 3D movie, Space Show, and some special pavilions, so it’s a great value;
When entering, don’t choose the main entrance (Main Entrance), try to choose the side doors on both sides, the queue will be much smaller;
The creatures on display inside the museum, such as the hides of brown bears and moose, are all authentic;
The museum is home to over 200 scientists, engaged in relevant scientific research, as well as a large number of Masters and PhDs graduating from here every year. This is not just a museum, but a scientific research base, so please view it with awe;
Try to get there as early as possible because there is just so much to see that you can’t see it all in one day. You can organize your day as follows: in the morning, you can see the various exhibits (including the Blue Whale, T-Rex Dinosaur, Brown Bear, Rainforest, etc.), and in the afternoon, you can see the 3D movie, Space Show and some specific exhibits. This is a good way to make the most of your time and not get too tired.
Be sure to go to the times on your ticket for both the 3D movie and Space Show, which are both about 45 minutes long.

3) Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located on the east side of Central Park and houses a collection of paintings, drawings, totems, porcelains, sculptures, and other precious objects from all over the world. What shocked us the most is that there are many porcelains from the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong periods, as well as paintings and calligraphy from the Song Dynasty, etc. One part of the museum restores the structure of an ancient Chinese courtyard.
The kids don’t like it here, but if you have an interest in art and history, it’s a must-see. We were there around 3 pm this time so it was quick to get in, there was no wait and the tickets were bought on the spot using a Kiosk for $25 a person, kids under 12 are free. You can find more information at the official Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

4) Central Park

Located in Uptown Manhattan, New York’s Central Park is the largest urban park in New York and is very large, covering over 800 acres, almost half of Uptown, and stretching from 59th Street to 110th Street. Two famous museums (the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) are located on either side of Central Park, and the park is home to large forests, lakes, zoos, theaters, and more. You can book your tickets on the official Empire State Building website and choose from a variety of prices depending on the floor you arrive at and the different tours available, the cheapest being $37 for adults and $31 for kids.
7) Times Square

Times Square is a world-famous commercial center located at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, stretching from 42nd Street to 47th Street, and a large Disney store sits right in the middle of Times Square.
It is very crowded, especially at night, so if you are traveling with elderly children, make sure you take care of them and don’t get lost. Times Square was named after the New York Times, which was headquartered here, so it was named after the Times.
8) National September 11 Memorial & Museum

As you can see from the name of the memorial, it is dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 attacks and is located on the site of the original World Trade Center Twin Towers.
